Explaining My Un-Derpy Conduct

Greetings Every pony.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been sick lately, which put me behind on other projects I had in the fire that have kept me from updating this blog. I'm already working on a new article and will have something up soon, with hopefully other somethings posted on a regular basis after that.

What It Means To Take 'Derpy' Back!

Derpy Hooves is the name given to a loveable, crosseyed pony from 'My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic' Lauren Faust's brilliant re-imagining of Hasbro's 'My Little Pony' franchise.

Derpy was given her name by fans of the show who felt a connection with the unnamed background pony to whom this blog is dedicated. Unfortunately, when the show's creators paid homage to the fans by Christening her officially as 'Derpy' a controversy arose.

Apparently while the word 'Derpy' can mean 'awkward', 'embarrassing', or 'lacking common sense' it can also mean 'retarded' and is sadly sometimes used as slang for such.

The Good: The Fans love Derpy, they love her name, and they love she represents: a good natured, persevering soul with a quick smile and a pleasant disposition.

The Bad: No one wants to endorse slang or to make other people feel bad. The whole theme of MLP: FiM is one of love, tolerance, and acceptance.

The Reality: Word meanings change all the time. Example: In the 80's the word 'bad' came to be used as a compliment. Words are defined by their usage in society, and that brings us to ...

The Solution: If Derpy is associated with something negative, it's up to us, the Bronies, the Pegasisters, the fans to change its meaning. If you have a friend who's a Brony, wish him a 'Derpy' day. Know a Pegasister? The next time she does something worthy of praise, how about telling her, "Wow! That's a really 'Derpy' thing you did!"

CAUTION: This should only be practiced among the initiated who understand that 'Derpy' is good. As time goes by you can tell your non-Brony friends about what you're doing so when you wish them 'A Derpy Evening' they know the score.

This is a minor solution to a minor problem that might not really need solving anyway, but ask yourself this: The next time you see Derpy Hooves and her smiling loveable face brightens your day just a hair, isn't it worth it to do her a good turn after all the enjoyment she's brought to our little fan-community?
