In the beginning Matt Stone created the 'Derp' ... and no, sadly you didn't read that wrong. While doing some research of an etymological nature I stumbled across the origin of the word 'Derp' courtesy of Know Your Meme. Turns out the word was first spoken as a throw away punchline uttered by Matt Stone in the film 'Basketball'!
Yes ... that Baseketball and that Matt Stone.
I know Derpy, I'm as shocked as you are.
Considering this guy is one of the two creators of South Park one of the most offensive and vulgar shows to ever air, I can understand how 'Derp' came by its' dubious reputation. As disheartening as this is, if the Magic of Friendship can defeat Discord and the Power of Love can banish Chrysallis, I guess the Gift of Knowledge can help us overcome Derp's dubious definition.
And it does add one thing in our favor. From all appearances the word itself had no intended meaning. It was just a funny blurb. The meaning was given it by those who repeated it, just like we're trying to do to make the word a positive influence. If one meaning can be assigned a word by general unsage, so can another.
I'll be back tomorrow with possible uses and translations for the word, as well as a few other goodies. Keep on derpin' everybody!
